An evening of geek adventures

Tonight I finally decided I’m comfortable enough with Active Directory that I should wade in and “un-orphan” my poor little web server. He’s been stuck in a busted domain for almost a year when I last reconfigured the home network around AD. Pleasantly, it went smoothly and everything still works. I’m leaning towards promoting him to an AD controller soon to mitigate my concerns about my existing controller (which seems… flaky).
So that’s the good news.
The bad news is my that my main desktop at home here appears to have taken a major dump upon itself. And I’m struggling to figure out why! Got an AVG update today which wanted a reboot (odd for them, but couple other machines behaved the same and have had no isues so not pointing fingers yet). Well, that machine hasn’t been rebooted in a loooong time. And dangit, I sure wish I hadn’t…. it won’t come up in any sort of stable fashion. Slooow to initialize. Sloooow to log in. And once its up I get a series of errors of various software bits not starting and then it pretty much locks up. I can access network shares on it from other machines (which is good!) but dangit…
I’m probably the one to blame here. I abuse this thing in all sorts of odd fashions. I tend to try out new software on it first before letting any other machines get polluted. And last weekend I was diddling around with some services running on it…. THAT’s probably my culprit. But ya know, I’m able to “manage” it from the domain controller, so I turned all the services that I recall setting to manual back on. And still… no love. Nuts. XP’s silly recovery utility would be handy about now.
On a plus note: I had recently realized it has been running win2k for over 2 years now so I really shouldn’t be terribly surprised or upset. The timing though… the timing sucks. At least I got another free licensed XP recently.
If I can’t get some stuff running in some fashion, some backups are going to be tragically challenging. But, I think I’ll leave that for tomorrow’s project and go read a book. I clearly won’t be playing any WoW tonight :-p
Later: boy, as I look at this thing more, I do believe I have a drive issue…
