Operatic stuff and news from the bigs

Start with some quick news from the “bigs”:
- Microsoft Live is now serving up some free AntiVirus scanning and such. I’d love to try it, but it won’t work with Firefox, Opera or… amusingly enough, Internet Explorer 7. Figures. Djorks. I suppose at some point I’ll fire it up from a virtual machine and see what it looks like.
- Our friends at Google Mail have joined the 90s and added Antivirus scanning to their service.
My great experiment with using Opera full time didn’t go so well today. A few websites I need/like don’t render so well… and it crashed twice. doh. Certainly not uninstalling it and I’ll still use it, but it won’t be the default browser. A shame - I really like the Feeds manager built-in. Although the obvious drawback to that finally occurred to me this morning: unlike a web/net version of software, this is NOT accessible from anywhere or any machine. Back to Firefox I crawl with my tail between my legs.
Speaking of Netvibes (we were?): what do you suppose is the profit model for something like this? I mean, I love the technology and the concept and I use it daily (frequently). So how do they plan to make money with it? I think this question applies to a lot of the “web 2.0″ applications.
