Just a bit on gaming

Been a while since I posted anything about gaming. Probably never on this blog now that I think of it…

As some may recall, I tend to really enjoy MMORPGs. I was dang near addicted to Everquest for years. I’ll spare the history - you can dig into my older blog for some of that stuff [edit:  well, you could before I killed off the old blog!]
Had started up with World of Warcraft (again) back in October. At first I was really enjoying it but it got old again. Fast. I barely played for a few weeks which gets a bit silly since you pay monthly for the darned thing. In fact, I was about to cancel it when I decided to try a new character before giving up. Started up a Night Elf rogue and … it turns out I wasn’t quite ready to quit just yet. Loved the “newbie” areas and love the class. Suddenly it is fun again!

My Take on WoW:
Thing that’s interesting about WoW is that although it is a “massively multi-player” game, the early levels really are more about doing the quests - solo. You might group up with someone if they happen to be doing the same quest you are, but there are so many quests and order isn’t always important which means pickup groups rarely work. Nice when it works out, but I just don’t count on it.

So, for now I’m lvl 19 or so and digging it. I pop online, run a few quests, chat with friends and pop off. If a bunch of guildies have chars around the same level, we might all convene on an area, share out quests and do some slaughtering (grouping really CAN be fun in WoW, just a pain at low levels). A big change from my EQ days when 3+ hrs a night, almost every night, was sometimes the norm.

I tend to think of WoW as a single player game surrounded by other people. Weird, but it works for me. I’ll never be as hooked on it as I was on Everquest, and I think that’s ok… Some nights I have other things to do!

Got an email inviting me to apply for the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes beta last week! Pretty excited so I immediately logged off of WoW and took the surveys related to the beta. Alas, I’m still waiting to hear if I was accepted. I’m pretty excited about this one.

Related news: Dungeons and Dragons Online has an open beta thingy starting up now. Might have to check it out soon. Many fond memories of rolling the dice back in Jr. High and early High School. :-)
