Some toolbox candidates

Toolbox? Yeah toolbox — see the link over there on the right. :-)

I might have some more candidates for it. In fact, one is in for sure: memtest86+ This guy’s a lean and mean memory testing machine. I’ve burned the iso onto a mini-cd and it makes a nice little memory tester. Just boot to it and it starts the tests right away. I’m calling it a toolbox add, even though it isn’t on the actual toolbox USB key. But it’s my toolbox, so I’m allowed to break rules.

This next one I’m still playing with. Ewido — an anti-malware tool. Again, I’m still playing with it, so don’t claim to be an expert. I can tell you it is easy to use and very frequently updated. Just using the free version and as such have very explicitely turned off the “real time” features. As expected with tools in this field, it finds some that the others don’t. And vice-versa. For the moment I’m adding it to the “every couple weeks” scanning suite of tools and unless it does something goofy plan to add it to the toolbox soon.

I have one more candidate tool to work with, but have yet to build a test scenario for it. Winpooch.

Winpooch is a Windows watchdog, free and open source. Anti spyware and anti trojan, it gives a full protection against local or external attacks by scanning the activity of programs in real time. Associated with ClamWin antivirus, Winpooch keeps safe your computer against virus.

Now this one is a bit odd I think. You’d think an open source solution would get just TONS of testing and reviewing, wouldn’t you? Oddly enough, while I’ve found a lot of folks mentioning it, I really haven’t found any sort of testing results for it. Strange… and makes me a bit nervous, to be honest. But I’ll give it a shot soon and see how it goes.
