MS OneNote and/or Wiki

Been a while since I mentioned this product, but I’m still a raving fan of microsoft’s OneNote. I find it an incredibly slick way to organize a lot of data — in particular, all my various notes that I like to scribble when working on projects. The ability to tag things as “to-dos” is very very helpful and the free form way of organizing documents works well when I’m taking notes in a meeting. Although the origin of this product was aimed more at digital ink and tablet pcs, it definitely works very well without either. (there’s a free trial at that link above).
So here’s an interesting tale. Peter and I were talking today about how our project could really benefit from a wiki. He’s in the development group at one of our clients and we generally see eye to eye on most topics. We also realized that while a wiki would benefit the two of us, many of the other folks on the project would rarely or never use it. (damned luddites…)
Coincidentally, I got home this evening and stumbled over a blog posting about hosting a personal wiki on your own computer. Being the geek that I am, I couldn’t help but be fascinated by the idea, and it kind of dovetailed nicely into that convo that Peter and I had just had a few hours earlier. And heck, the wiki product in the article even uses Ruby, something (along with Ruby on Rails) I really wish to spend more time with.
Then it struck me: I already have a personal wiki! That’s pretty much exactly how I use and organize OneNote.
Wow, a “full circle post”. how cool am I?

Ok, I’m intrigued… I’ll scour the MSDN binders at the office tomorrow and give OneNote a try. Does it run as a windows app or an IIS web application?
Runs as a windows app. Takes a bit of getting used to (depending on how you wish to organize things) but once I got my little “system” worked out I’ve truly learned to love it.
