The Google Pack?

Just saw in the google blog the new post about the “Google Pack.” From the About page:
Google Pack is a free collection of essential software from Google and other companies. The software in the Google Pack helps you browse the web faster, remove spyware and viruses, organize your photos, and more. Learn more about each of the programs in the Google Pack.
Google Pack also takes the hassle out of downloading, installing, and updating software. You can download and install the entire Google Pack in just a few clicks. And the included Google Updater helps you discover new programs and keep your current software up to date.
Hmm… I see. All free stuff. Quite an interesting list of “necessities”. (I’d go into details of what’s included but assume you can click the link up there too. However, be sure to click the “Add or Remove Software” link to see all of the stuff in the pack). The only choice that I might question is the Symantec Antivirus. It isn’t quite as free as the others. Appears to be a 6 month deal. With comcast giving away McAfee AV and several good free (for home use) products (AVG!) why this one?
Ah well, it is a nice enough offer and the rest of the software is, as a rule of thumb, nifty. (how many blogs do you read that use “nifty”, huh?). The easy installing and updating via the Google Updater is a very nice touch and aimed squarely at the casual computer users out there — but will those casual users find this offer? Or is this the call out to the geeks of the world to help their casual counterparts?
