Podcasting revisited, take 2

A week or two back, I posted some more thoughts on podcasting. I’m still a bit bemused by the whole notion — particularly as I don’t actually own a “real” mp3 player. But, I’ve been listening to various ‘casts during my commutes and it is all rather intriguing. My iPAQ works great for this stuff and the GSPlayer just simply rocks as a player. (and I see a new version is out!).
I had mentioned my 256MB card in that earlier article. It died. Sadly. Have borrowed a friend’s 1GB SD card while I await my replacement. I ordered a 512MB card ’cause they’re cheap! I originally wanted bigger, but I don’t seem to have over 3 or 4 hundred MB on the card at once and I tend to not use it for music. 512 should be plenty.
So what do I listen to? Here’s a quick rundown just because I’m a “sharer”. :-p
- Security Now - This one features Steve Gibson (of grc.com fame) and Leo Laporte (of Tech TV fame). They put one out each week and discuss “important issues of personal computer security.” Usually pretty interesting and they seem to work well together. Episodes are 30′ish minutes. They did a few weeks on VPNs that I found interesting.
- TWiT (this Week in Tech) - Still getting a feel for this one. Episodes are closer to the hour mark. There’s quite a cast of show hosts (bios here) and they generally are pretty interesting to listen to. Frankly, it is kind of like a profesionally recorded geek coffee klatsch… and that’s ok. They tend to crack me up. This one is not real technical, but covers some territory.
- Security Monkey (aka A Day in the Life of an Information Security Investigator) - Interesting blog with some great case stories also has a kinda weekly podcast. A bit on the weird side and really not as technical as I had hoped, but… still interesting enough that I listen to it each week. He’s just getting it rolling so I’ll hang and see how it all turns out.
- Will Wheaton - he’s just starting out too. Has only done a few ‘casts and is still looking for his niche. I think his goal was to be weekly, but holidays and his “poker work” appear to cut into that a bit. Pretty much have to scbscribe to the blog to spot the new podcasts as they come out. Great radio voice on this guy and while not technical, he’s pretty interesting to listen to. I hope he keeps doing the podcasts, even if not weekly. Heck, monthly would be fine too.
- IT Conversations - I’m still getting the hang of this one. Lots of variety comes across this one, so I’ve subscribed to the feed and have snagged a few interesting looking ‘casts. But haven’t had them bubble up in the queue yet, so not sure what to expect.
- Sploitcast - I’ll list it here, but I’ve not listened to it yet. Brand new, only 2 episodes out there. I’ve been told it is interesting, but the source was not a real technical person… so we’ll see.

Only podcast you need to hear, ever again. And lucky for us all they’re really short.
Funny though.
Think amateur Jon Stewart bit.
