Orkut — stability issues?

A friend sent me an invite to join orkut this week. I glanced at the page, it looked “social’ish” and all so I figured I would give it a shot. After jacking around for 10 minutes or so and getting tired of “Bad server, no donut” type messages, I moved on…
Well, he’s persistent, and I got another invite tonight. I’m stubborn too, so stuck with it for 20 minutes or so and finally got myself added and even managed to get him added as a friend. That’s as far as I’ve gotten so far, as the service appears to be completely dead at the moment. I was hoping to at least find an “About” page before it died, but alas.
So spill, how long has it been around - a couple years, right? The “dead server” page mentions Google, so I looked at Google’s services page, but don’t see a mention of orkut there.
I’m bemused.

Orkut uses google accounts so it’s just gotta be google.

Why is orkut migrating to Google Accounts?
Google Accounts are better protected against fraud, impersonation, and abuse. In addition, by upgrading your orkut account to a Google Account, it will be easier to use other Google services like Google Groups, Google Alerts, Froogle Shopping List, Personalized Search, your Personalized Homepage, Google Answers, and many future Google services. You can find out more about Google Accounts at http://www.google.com/help/faq_accounts.html
From what I can tell it’s VERY beta, but when I snoop around in firefox it seems to work more than it doesn’t today. Yesterday was another story though… they were certainly working on things yesterday. But today is mucho better.
But… is Google Accounts just a competitor of Microsoft Passport? I’m reasonably certain other companies besides MS can use Passport, so not sure if Orkut using Google Accounts makes them a google app or not?
Actually, upon reflection, I saw their service outage page and the huge Google banner on it enough this evening to feel like I can assume they are indeed some part of the big “G”.
orkut rocks!!!
