New server, Hamachi Linux

Did I mention that I “get” why people would want to run Hamachi as a service? After having a machine spontaneously reboot while remotely connected, I totally get it now.
Speaking of which, I was farting around with iptables and emulating some clever ways Peter had showed me to restrict access to some useful ports, when I realized I hadn’t put Hamachi on the new server yet. Why am I mucking with rules on the external interface when I could just do all my gunk via Hamachi? Hmm? Right. So last night I snagged it and installed it.
That first go around, things weren’t going so well and I was a bit pressed for time. Hamachi was installed and tuncfg seemed to be doing whatever it is that it does, but I couldn’t get hamachi to go online. Spent some time crusing the forums and didn’t really find anything that matched what I was seeing. Tabled it and moved on to another project. There are advantages to a.d.d.!
Tonight I decided to just start over and reinstall, paying closer attention to when I sudo vs. when I don’t…. so after scrutinizing the README, I started the install steps again and I’m pleased to say that things are working this time around. (In my defense… while visiting the hamachi forums this evening I noticed there apparently was a server outage yesterday at some point). So I suppose I should actually read instructions more often.
Found two useful items at the forums. One, a little gui for hamachi/linux. So far, I’m getting by just fine at the command line, but I must confess I’m not above vncserver and gnome-session from time to time. *cough* The other item is an article on installing Hamachi as a Linux Service. (I said I get it now, ok?) At the moment, having it run as a service doesn’t seem critical, things are stable. But it is easy enough to do so… and that’ll be the next project.
Or maybe I should set up some nightly db backup jobs first? Just realized I still haven’t done that either. doh.
