Free (server version) of VMware

Just caught an article off of c|net news.com with some great news: VMware to make server product free. Apparently, the GSX flavor of VMware is what we’re looking at here. Pretty exciting stuff as we just got the free VMware player a few months ago. I guess I’ll keep an eye on the news next Monday and see if this is indeed what’s really going to be announced.

There’s some good discussion — and potentially more info (maybe) — at the vmware forums.

I’ve mentioned vmware here a few times – I’m a huge, albeit cheap, fan of the concept and the product. To see the GSX version coming out as free is very exciting. It only runs on windows 2x servers and linux, no XP or 2k workstation, so be aware of that… but if you have a server to build images on, you can then use the free “player” to run them on XP.

I see Slashdot has picked up this story as well.  As always, interesting and amusing comments there.

Not the GSX product as I was guessing, but apparently a new product altogether instead. Well, or GSX got renamed along the way — it no longer shows up anywhere on the site. VMware Server is a robust yet easy to use product for users new to server virtualization technology. VMware Server enables companies to partition a physical server into multiple virtual machines, and to start experiencing the benefits of virtualization. [...]
