Day in the life

No rest for the wicked I guess. I’m happy to say that the servers we put in yesterday are working well and the performance difference is quite delightful. Ended up spending another hour or so on them after my post last night and a couple more hours today, but all “house-keeping” type stuff. Finalizing the nightly job streams, making sure some of the db synchronization was working, cross copying backups and other such fun. Not exactly the exciting side of being self-proclaimed “ops guy” for a small company, but it sure needs to be done.

Today started a bit early as the daughter had an indoor soccer game at 8am. Now, I tend to get up very early, so 8am isn’t a big deal. But, this made it pretty much like a school day. Their opponents were undefeated… we had a team of tired girls a bit psyched out before they even began. I’m pleased/proud to say that they finished with a tie (4-4) and finished quite strong. And my daughter scored again! A penalty kick from about midfield just over the goalie’s reach.

After the game, I headed off to meet a new client. One of my past clients had offered up the referral and I agreed to come over and have look and see what was going on. Very nice lady (around 70 I think) and real easy to work with. Her computer is basically in good shape, but why Dell sold her a 2.66Ghz PC with XP and 128MB of ram is just beyond me. Man, at first I thought it was dreadfully broke! Frankly, I could barely work with it… that poor hard drive just never stopped spinning. We talked a bit about ram and how an upgrade would benefit her desire to learn more and use it more. She agreed, so I’ll be back Friday evening to pop in another 256MB stick. I predict she’s going to be simply amazed at how responsive it’ll be.

Oh yeah, she’s on dial-up too. So, that amount of memory and a dialup connection helped to ground my excitement a bit about “web 2.0″ social and interactive sites. Frankly, a lot of folks are getting left behind with all this new/nifty stuff. Good stuff to keep in mind.
Heh, and she needs SP2, but I think I’ll burn it on to a CD before my next visit…

Got back from there and spent some time finalizing the jobs and configs on those new servers. Now I’m just chilling in front of the SuperBowl and thinking maybe I should plow through my my BlinkList articles that I’ve tagged as “toRead.” Probably some more potential blog topics in there… a bit daunting though; I already have an immense backlog of things I’d like to cover.
