VMware released the free server! (beta)

As hinted at just a few days ago, the good folks at VMware did indeed release a free product today: VMware Server. Not the GSX product as I was guessing, but apparently a new product altogether instead. Well, or GSX got renamed along the way — it no longer shows up anywhere on the site.

VMware Server is a robust yet easy to use product for users new to server virtualization technology. VMware Server enables companies to partition a physical server into multiple virtual machines, and to start experiencing the benefits of virtualization.

One thing that’s a bit odd is that while beta is mentioned at the top, it certainly isn’t touched upon anywhere on the page. Just how beta is this product, I wonder? And, perhaps more importantly, can I safely assume that any server images I create with it will work with the (also free) VMware Player (not beta)? The FAQ does mention that the “real” version is expected Q2 2006 and has a fair amount of info.

Exciting stuff!
