Tiny Wi-Fi rant, New Meebo feature and SQL Server observation

I’m a huge fan of wi-fi at the office, I rarely ever connect any other way. But lately, I’m starting to think I’m not going to use it for work anymore… Just getting annoying and too danged scary. Today was damn near the proverbial straw that broke the back.

My office is maybe 40 feet from a microwave. 20 feet in the exact opposite direction is the 802.11g wireless access point. Visualize? I’m in between them, should be safe, right?

Nope.

Damn it, I lost code today because someone elected to make hot chocolate. Final straw I think… plugging into that darned 100MB cable.

Moving on… Meebo has a new feature that’s the epitome of “oh my gawd, about time!” Not only can you log into your various IM clients individually, but you can create a meebo account and do ‘em all at once with one signon. Yay!

Meebo members can sign into all of their IM sessions with a single ID! In the (near) future, members will also be able to save preferences (like sounds and appearances) and chat logs.

And it’s completely free!

More at the blog post, check it out — this is great stuff. If nothing else, go there to admire how the website works.

Finally, just a minor observation, yet I thought it was pretty cool. We use SQL Server a lot at work for our projects. And, I’m the lucky fella that gets to do a lot of the operational junk — primarily I guess that means set up the backup schedules and such. For one of the prod servers, I have a nightly job set up that keeps a rolling set of the last 14 backups. In other words, when it does a daily backup, it deletes any backups in that directory older than 14. Handy stuff to manage space utilization.

Backups on that server are rather large. So recently I added a little follow-up job to zip (and encrypt — oh yeah, as an aside, I really like the 7zip product) those big ol’ backups and then delete the original file. Good ol’ .bat files. Works great, but I realized I might have a problem with the file pruning that SQL server had been doing for me. No such problem — turns out it prunes ANYthing in that backup directory that is too old. VERY cool. Somehow, some way, I can exploit this for other maintenance activities… Too damned handy not to!

rofl - I’m sorry, but I’m picturing you standing between the two things while electricity arcs between the 802, you, and the microwave in some sort of blue arcing thing while you twitch like you’re in the grips of the emperor’s force-lightning.

    — Vox runs in, slaps the back of Rich G.’s head and then lights up a ciggie in the arch between the microwave, Handy and the 802 —

    This was fun ;)
