BlogBurst – Blogs and Main Stream Media?

February 20, 2006 by Chris · 2 Comments

Got my invite via email to join up with BlogBurst this morning. I guess we can now safely say that they’re not overly picky… *cough* Pretty neat concept/service and (for somewhat obvious reasons) I sure hope they get the traction going with the publishers to really get it rolling.

BlogBurst is a syndication service that places your blog on top-tier online destinations. You get visibility, audience reach and traffic, while publishers weave the rich and diverse fabric of the blogosphere into their sites.

For bloggers, check out the “Bloggers” page for more info, but here’s the key bit for me:

What do you get out of this?

  • Visibility and exposure on major news and portal sites
  • Traffic through attribution and links back to your blog
  • Authority and credibility within your topic area
  • New readers who wouldn’t normally find out about your blog
  • The opportunity to take your blog to the next level

How could I not be interested! Granted, other bloggers are asking questions along the lines of “So? Yeah? And what else is in it for me?” For instance, read the comments in reply to this TechCrunch post. There’s a nice comment in there from one of the Pluck guys:

Just wanted to weigh in with an important clarification.

We will provide a blogger compensation model after we get through the beta period. We simply need time to discover usage patterns and land on the right monetization model with publishers and bloggers.

[update: A bit more on that topic]

The signup process is pretty painless. The usual sort of “claim your blog” (several different ways including the scary option of providing your blog’s username and password), tag yourself, enter some info about self and blog and then… done. Now just kick back and hope the publishers come on board and find something interesting.

Still in beta, so I haven’t figured out how some of this will work, but once logged in there isn’t currently much to do. I’m assuming that for now this is a “set it and forget it” kind of thing. Right now I can manage my account info, my blog info, visit a Content tab which has search thingy — and doesn’t find any of my posts!. Next to that is a Reports tab that will likely be nifty when it is more than a screenshot (again, remember this is beta and I’m not whining!). Final tab is, of course, Help and the FAQ, at least, is nicely populated.

Not much else to say at this point except that I think this is a truly great concept and hope to see it grow legs over the coming year.
