Google Page Creator
Now here’s one that I didn’t anticipate coming (and darn it, it isn’t a calendar!): The Google Page Creator. This is essentially a quick and visual way for folks to put content on the web. Useability is pretty straight-forward, especially if you’d ever used any of the online page creation tools from the last decade. Ok, to be fair, this is a step up from those days.
A huge step up, actually. Layout and “style” is all CSS. The CSS is “inlined” into the page, but still, good stuff; even includes IE hacks. My page appears to be xhtml 1.0 strict too. And I just noticed that while in the page builder I can directly access the generated xhtml/html, but not the associated CSS. So, it would appear that you really want to like one of the included theme and layout combinations. The variety seems pretty decent, but I’m sure that will make some folks howl. Granted, I don’t think the target audience is the folks that will be howling…
Those will be the same folks howling when they that it doesn’t completely validate. If I get time later I’ll see how much of those “violations” are things that I could control or work around.
You can customize your theme and layout and then add your content. Or, add your content, then tweak theme and layout. It doesn’t much matter. When you’re done tweaking, you get published to yourname.googlepages.com/home (here’s my first little effort). You can easily import pictures and other files and all has a nice “ajaxy” feel.
So… Google is, to some extent, in the web hosting business now. I guess I better go back read those terms and conditions that I flew by. I glanced, but didn’t really look too hard. Curious to see what their blog post for this one will have to say about that.
[update:]
Slashdot has it up already – pretty quick for them! As always, the comments prove to be interesting with a nice mix of entertaining.

Nifty. I might try to check it out. Probably will be less cussing than using the other stuff, but only time will tell.
Ya know, your icon thing that I assume is supposed to be a nucleus and an atom rotating around it? Have you ever noticed it looks like a nipple right? It’s very Janet Jackson.
Just a thought…
Well… now I know why I like my little “solo” logo so much…
[...] I first wrote about GPC this past February. Reading that old post, it would appear that I liked it. Yet, I never really went back to play with it… For me, that’s probably not about to change, but for folks looking for a free spot to put up a few web pages, this is certainly better than some of the other ad banner riddled options. I wonder what the traffic limits are? I think 100MB is the cap for size, but I haven’t found anything about traffic yet. [...]
