Analytics and Job Searching

How odd. Google Analytics appears to have reset itself a few hours ago. Earlier today I had checked and was pleased (and surprised) to see that yesterday had been my biggest day ever. Didn’t look into too much, but surmising maybe the google post? Moot point though, I went back just now to check out where the volume was going and see that suddenly I no longer have a full day’s worth of data for yesterday. Now it is only current up to 6pm yesterday. hmmph. Ah well, not like I pay anything for it…

Tripped over an interesting job searching site today called SimplyHired. This thing is pretty slick as it combines a bunch of the major job sites and corporate sites all into one place. Searching is pretty easy to work with and I discovered some little tricks too!

If you want to get a good search going, use the “browse” feature. However, I live in a tiny little suburb near a large town. If I started the browse with my little city, I couldn’t drill into the categories I wanted. So, I plugged in the large town, set my industry and categories. On the results page, I changed the radius to 50 miles and then, in the url field, typed in my city name instead of the larger city’s name. Presto, a custom search for what I want within 50 miles of home.

Killer feature: RSS Feeds! Omg, ’nuff said.

Is it the full deal? Nah. You won’t be storing a resume here, for instance. But to keep an eye on the market it is pretty sweet.

[dear co-workers reading this: relax, I wasn't out looking for jobs. I still love y'all too much. kinda. Thanks bye]

  • Dang, simplyhired.com is pretty darn sweet. I’ve got my RSS feed going… Not that I’m looking or anything ;) Like you said, it is nice to keep an eye on the market.

  • Hi,

Very Cool. Love this blog. Especiallu the bit after every post that says Bookmark this article, I haven’t seen that before with all those cool buttons as well!

I see you left a message on my post at the forum advising me to use chicklets on my links. If only I knew what that was,

Plus I see that you are using the same blog template as I am but you are able to have buttons and stuff on the side. Does that mean you have your own hosting?

    Shem.

  • Hi Shem, yes I do have my own hosting which gives me a few more options than you get at wordpress.com. “Chicklets” are those little graphic images splattered all over my right side bar. :-)

I’ll pop over to wordpress.org/support in a bit and try and explain my earlier answer in a bit more detail.

  • Also check out Indeed.com – the most comprehensive search engine for jobs – adding over 1 million jobs per week.

  • [...] I mentioned SimplyHired in a post last week. Still have those feeds rolling in. Received a comment to that article suggesting a I have a look at Indeed.com as well. As I’m a slave to the comments, I had to at least look, right? [...]

  • [...] First I looked at SimplyHired. That generated a comment suggesting I check out Indeed. That one generated an email from “Jenny” encouraging me to have a look at PageBites.com. Aren’t I eager to please? Seriously though, I think this is an incredibly useful type of application. I recall when I was actually actively looking for work a few years back and trawling a kabillion job boards was intensely frustrating and tedious. [...]
