The VS2k5 Journey - Day 2

Yesterday I talked/whined a bit about my day of trying to wrassle an understanding of Visual Studio 2005. Today, things went a bit better. Maybe not tons of progress, but I don’t feel quite so dazed and confused at least. And, against Vox’s wishes, I’m not quite ready to do ASP.NET development with Emacs. Hello no — he knows I’d use vi

Anywho, I started this morning with the book I was using yesterday. Quickly decided it wasn’t quite getting the job done for me. I can see where it would work for some folks but not me. I tend to learn by hopping and skipping around a topic. Dabbling even. Then, as I get comfy, I’ll dive in deeper. The book takes the approach of “let’s show you something interesting and then dive all the way through the object model of it while showing you lots of Visual Studio buttons to press.” Omg, no thanks. My head was swimming.

Bailed on the book, found some “ASP.NET for ASP classic dudes” type links and started skimming. After 30 minutes of that, decided I wanted to know more about styling, skinning and theming. In other words, how do you make something built in this tool look nice. Spent a fair amount of time, but got a handle on it and, just to be cocky, built a little app based around the data grid control — live database and everything! Go me. Looks nice, is sortable and offers paging. Feeling a lot more comfortable now.

Tomorrow I’m on to “Master Documents” for layout. I see hints of some pretty cool stuff there. Get that whooped and then I’m off into prototype land for one of the next projects. I have a few coming my way — none with formal requirements or even Use Case documents — so I best start making some stuff up to get the customers thinking about what they’re after, eh?

The coding side of it? Eh… C# of VB.Net. Either works for now and I can’t be bothered to much care. Just another language. I was initially excited to be considering finally using C# as I’m definitely an old C guy. But… I’m starting to think that C# ain’t so much like C. Feels more like a offshoot of some perverse C++/Java/Delphi lost weekend. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

I’m not going to give you too much of a hard time for being a poor vi user…St. IGNUcius always says that somebody has to end up in purgatory :)

But I do have one question…how the heck do you get those small W icons for wikipedia links? I want to steal them for my blog lol!

The links thing is done via a nifty little plugin called “Link Inidication”. http://www.sw-guide.de/projekte/wordpress-projekte/link-indication-plugin/
