Fake Ajax, some Dia and bit of Bad Behavior

How positively fun is this post on Fake Ajax? Sure it’s cheesy. Sure it is IE only. But yet… I found myself adding it to a couple web apps that I know are largely used by IE users. Ya know, it does smooth things out nicely and Firefox just cheerfully ignores it. No harm done, right?
Working for a small company, largely still in start-up mode, we don’t have budget for every useful bit of software that we might like to have. Yesterday I received an IM from one of our “analysts” (for lack of a better term) desperate for some way to build some process flow diagrams for a rather convoluted interview he was scripting. Now I’m blessed with Visio… but I wasn’t about to hand over my laptop for a few hours. I used to use a slick opensource product in the past, but couldn’t remember the name. I hailed good ol’ Peter and he reminded me of what I was after: Dia. In particular, Dia for Windows. Need a diagramming project that just plain kicks butt and is free and GPL‘d? Check this critter out.
Yesterday morning I apparently was under my first blog comment spam attack. In under an hour I had over 100 spam comments hit and they didn’t appear to be slowing down. Now, I run Akismet to catch such nonsense, and it was catching ‘em all, but things were getting a bit annoying and taxing my wee server a bit. Decided to go get the Bad Behavior plugin. Installed it, turned it on and …. I’ve had one spam comment get through (caught by Akismet of course) in the last 36 hours. Holy cow this is incredible! BB gets ahead of the spammers before they can start posting. Having comment spam issues? Try this alongside your comment spam catcher of choice.
Bad Behavior is a set of PHP scripts which prevents spambots from accessing your site by analyzing their actual HTTP requests and comparing them to profiles from known spambots. It goes far beyond User-Agent and Referer, however. Bad Behavior is available for several PHP-based software packages, and also can be integrated in seconds into any PHP script.

I just downloaded Dia v0.95-pre4 to do a diagram for class and was surprised by the new higher quality widgets in the Cisco collections. Now Dia diagrams don’t have to be plain and boring… Go Dia!
