Yahoo! Mail beta - the easy way

Yahoo Mail Beta logoHave Yahoo Mail and want to see the often discussed new ajax’y beta interface? I saw a few pages with information similar to this already today. I attempted to nail down what worked for me and flesh it out a bit more to hopefully be less confusing. I apologize to the other folks with similar lists as I neglected to bookmark the links which is quite sloppy of me.

This worked for me on two accounts. Along the line you may be prompted to enter your password a few times. Don’t be alarmed.

  1. Log in to your Yahoo! Mail account.
  2. Click on “Options” (over on the far upper right of the screen)
  3. In the left Options panel, click on “Account Information”
  4. By “Member Information”, click Edit
  5. Under General Preferences, click the link next to “Preferred Content”
  6. Change the setting. I’ve been changing it to “Yahoo! United Kingdom”
  7. Click Finished, accept new terms and then click Finished again.
  8. Click on the “Mail” tab (top upper left)
  9. With luck, you’re now looking at the Beta invite for the Yahoo! Mail Beta. So click on “Try Beta Now”

If so inclined, after marveling at the nifty new interface, work your way back into Options and change your Preferred Content back to what it was. You won’t lose your beta.

And can I just say that at first glance, the beta seems to handle attached pictures so much better? Just don’t try it with IE7 beta 2 as you’ll be told your browser is unsupported. Oops, same for Opera 9 beta. I can promise it works with FF 1.5.x and IE 6 though. For what that’s worth.
