Widgets are the new … something?

I think I’m about to be all widgeted out. Did you see that Google announced Google Gadgets on the desktop? What are gadgets? Just another term for “widgets”.

So, my Opera 9 beta has widgets. Yahoo! Konfabulator is all about widgets. WordPress offers widgets. Google Desktop has to get in the act too? Maybe it is time to find the next bright shiny object and move on? This is getting silly. And, quite frankly, if everyone wants to offer desktop widgets we’re just diluting the talent-pool.

I confess that I used to keep Google Desktop around just for the powerful search features — especially within my Outlook mailboxes. However, since I found Lookout I’ve really not looked back and actually uninstalled my GD stuff.
