Err, I broke my Xubuntu

Suppose you have an Xubuntu install on an old laptop. Now suppose you’re not quite sure what you did… but after a reboot you couldn’t log in. Awkward, eh?
I’m a bit stumped over how to work around this one. I boot in “graphical mode”. I enter my username and password and they are accepted. Screen flickers away from X to the underlying console for a few seconds, then x appears to restart — back to the login screen. Distressing!
As I just use this thing for web browsing and some minor utility functions, it isn’t the end of the world if I have to reinstall… but I’m a bit bemused as to what I might have done to cause this!

Take a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and you’ll probably find out what is broken…from there, you can actually troubleshoot it
See why linux scares me… a geek can’t make it go, but a ,granny can use it all day long with ease. I’m not a granny or a geek… I fall somewhere in between. :/
Right Vox. First I gotta figure out how to actually get logged in…
Can you get logged in via console? When at the graphical prompted, tap ALT+F1 to get to a normal console login. Who boots to X anyway
