The move seems to be about complete

DreamHost logoI’ve been self-hosting, from home, my web stuff for quite a few years now. I recently decided that I have other things to do besides manage a server. Ok, so when things are going smoothly, managing my own server isn’t a big deal… But anyways, I’ve been looking around at various hosting plans and pondering moving to a hosted solution for a month or three now. To be honest, mainly since it started getting warm.

With my home office having moved to the top level last year, heat has become a concern. Looking around me right now, I see 4 running PCs (midtower ATX cases), 3 laptops, one 17′ tube and a couple LCDs. A shelf full of network equipment as well. All that junk generates heat. And, unfortunately, the one that generates the most heat is my web server. It is based on an AMD Thunderbird 900 and those things were not know for running cool!

Caught wind of a Dreamhost offer late this week and decided to sign up for it over lunch today. I’m now the proud owner of the “Crazy Domain Insane” plan (who names those things?!?). Pretty simple deal really — sign up for that plan, prepay for a year and use “777″ as the discount and first year is under $10. How can you say no? One year of hosting, decent amount of traffic and space (certainly for my meager volumes) for that price? Yeah, I pounced.

I’d been using zoneedit to maintain my DNS stuff up until today, so just moved that over to DreamHost and everything updated pretty quickly. While I was waiting for the DNS updates I backed up my dbs from the old server, restored to the new server and FTP’d over all my site stuff as well. Hopefully I didn’t forget anything! Oh, and what’s kinda cool is I have SSH access so I can keep using my favorite two tools: PuTTY and winSCP. :-)

Holler if you notice anything broken. Oh, and let me know if things seem faster or slower too. So far, I’m leaning towards faster…
