Direct from Microsoft: No More Support for Windows 98, ME and XP service pack 1. I have a couple relatives that are going to need upgrading… wonder if my Father-in-law is ready for linux?

The latest versions of Ubuntu, SuSE, etc. are very user-friendly. And many distros including Ubuntu have live CDs so you can try it out before committing to install.
If Vox hear’s you say this, or ask this… he’ll probably fill your mailbox with HOWTO links and pointers and more fanboi mail than I ever generated over kewlgle.com lol
And yes, I agree with Marc, with the right distro and installations of openoffice and firefox with plugins (What I do to make sure my firefox is up to snuff is I go to neopets.com and play some games if that site works it’ll pretty much do anything) you’ll be able to hook him up with linux relatively painlessly.
