Wiki Wanderings - Wiki.com and Dekiwiki

Earlier today I was stumbling around (StumbleUpon is such fun!) and ended up at wiki.com. There was quite a bit of noise about this a few days ago, but I hadn’t really paid much attention. But holy cow, almost $3 million is a ton of money for a doman name! Helluva good name to have though…

Anywho, since I was there, I decided to have a look and signed up for my own wiki to play with. I guess this is using some flavor of DekiWiki? I’m blown away. The wysiwyg editor alone makes me want to throw rocks at my MediaWiki installation at work. (shameful how fickle I can be, isn’t it?) There’s mention of an upgrade program that I look forward to trying. Seriously, for some of the folks that I really want using this thing at the office, the wiki markup is a major stumbling block. Sure, I and the devs picked it up right away, but others are really struggling with it.

At the moment, I don’t have a strong need for a hosted wiki. But if I did… I’d be looking at this a lot closer. The username.wiki.com is kinda nice (yep, I’m a domain name squirrel), the price is right (if you don’t mind ads across the top of the screen) and it seems relatively easy enough to control access. Well, to control who can edit, I should say. As near as I can tell, there’s no option to hide your wiki from unauthorized users.

What you see at http://www.Wiki.com is a subset of MindTouch’s DekiWiki feature set. MindTouch has a few products, which will be more widely publicized in the coming months. MindTouch’s appliance, which is intended to be a network file server or read/write Intranet for businesses and enterprises. MindTouch’s DekiFarm, which is what is powering http://www.Wiki.com and http://www.ViaWiki.com. And some others we’ve not yet announced. If you’re looking for a complete collaboration tool/package for business, the MindTouch appliance is definitely the way to go. Ping us at 866-MindTouch if you’re interested in learning more.

Gosh, I hope this doesn’t count as a spam comment. I hope this post was sufficiently informative so as to not be considered spam.

I’m with you 100%. Except I desperately wanted DekiWiki securely in my office. I wasn’t into having another hardware device though. So, I was pestering MindTouch about alternative ways to deploy without having to struggle with the open source installation. My annoying them seemed to have paid off because I was invited to beta their latest product: MindTouch Deki. It’s a sofware appliance. I run it off an old dekstop workstation in the office. Everyone loves it. I’m not sure it’s public, but I saw another beta user talking about it so I’m not going to feel bad. Take a look here: http://www.mindtouch.com/evaluation login/pass is deki/beta. It’s a big download, but you can have it running in minutes after you download. It’s pretty interesting because you can move this thing from computer to computer very easily. I think I’m going to run one from my home for the family to use as a file and photo share (it’s free for the first 5 users and I’m not Catholic ;-) ).
