Some Meebo thoughts

Several weeks ago, the Netvibes and Meebo integration was announced. Initially I was pretty excited about it, but quickly grew disenchanted with how it worked. Losing my blinking tabs when messages arrived was a deal-breaker. However, I played with it enough during that time that I decided to switch to Meebo full time for IM purposes. Which, fortunately, coincided with my switching back to Firefox for browsing (meebo sucks on ie7b3 and Opera 9, alas).
Shortly afterwards, the Meebo Me service was announced and that pretty much sealed the deal as far as keeping me in Meebo goes. Pretty cool little service and I’ve had some fun and interesting chats with visitors — even touched base with an old friend after a several year break. (Hey MD!!). That being said, I moved the meebo me widget to the “About & Contact” page earlier tonight. Had some folks dinking around and somehow were “spam contact list adding” me. Was getting rather annoying.
Not everything is roses though. While there are no “show-stoppers”, I do have a short list of things I certainly love to see added (or someone show me how to do if it already exists):
- I would give just about anything to be able to change the sound played when a message is received. Sure, I can turn it off, but I don’t want to. I just want a bit less “jarring” noise as an option.
- Tighten up the netvibes integration. Granted, an extra tab in my browser vs. an extra tab in my Netvibes… not a huge difference. But for integration’s sake, it’d be nice to have it feel a bit more polished.
- It almost works in Opera. Just some tragic scrolling issues with keeping the current message in view. Would LOVE to see this addressed!
- While not the end of the world, it’d sure be nice to be able to move contacts around groups. Or to create new groups.
- How about some skins or style options? Box colors? backround color or image? Again, not earth-shattering, but would sure be nice.
See? Nothing huge (ok, new sound options would be so very welcome).
My daughter is hooked too. She’s busy adding the meebo me widget to her myspace thing right now. Fun stuff.
