Meebo Search

Meebo added a little search bar thingy at the bottom of their chat application at some point this week (yesterday?). You can almost minimize it away, or use it and select from Google, Amazon or Wikipedia searches.

As near as I can tell, this isn’t integrated with the chat functionality at all. A search opens a new window with results.
I’m trying to decide how useful this is. So far, I’m leaning towards the “not very” camp, but I’m willing to be dissuaded… I did a quick glance at their blog, but didn’t see any mention of this.
What I’d sure rather see is the ability to move users between groups!
[Update] Rich pointed out to me, via IM, that if you try different meebo servers, they may or may not have the search thingy. And if they do, it won’t always be at the bottom of the screen. Interesting…
[Update 2] Meebo blog post confirms that they’re testing search.
Some of you may have noticed a search bar either on the top of the page, the bottom, in the buddylist, or an in-context selection popup menu. We’ve sprinkled the different search types across our servers and are tracking which ones people like, dislike, use, don’t use, or ignore altogether.

I have no search functionality on my meebo page!
I only have it on the netvibes tab of meebo.
Hrm….
OK, I found it. www5.meebo didn’t have it, but if I changed manually to www3.meebo I could get it. Must be going live today and spreading itself around.
If you had meebo as your active desktop page it’d be more useful I think, but does anybody use a webpage as an active desktop? anyone? Buehler? Buehler?
Ya know… I was using WallNote as my active desktop for a couple months. And may again, actually, but that’s a future post. But the idea of using meebo as active desktop is intriguing…
