Color Tools

Palette GraphicI’ve been tested many times in my life. And every time, when it’s over, I look at my wife and say, “See? I told you I’m not color-blind!” But some of my web applications (and apparently clothing choices) would make folks wonder.

To that end, I’ve been bookmarking interesting color related tools as I find them.

  • Colortoy 2.0 - the Flash color schemer: Just found this one yesterday. Crisp and easy to use. Drop in your color (RGB or Hex value) and it gives you a nice palette of associated colors. Click one of those colors and it’ll do it again. If this thing had an eye-dropper tool I’d be in style heaven.
  • Color Palette Generator: Feed it a picture and it’ll feed you a complimentary color palette. If I ever pick out a new header graphic, I’m all over this one. That being said… maybe I should reconsider some of my current colors based on my header image?
While there, you might want to play with his img2txt generator too.
  • Color Schemer Online v2: Feed it a color, get a scheme. Huge pile of pre-defined schemes at that site as well.
  • EasyRGB Harmonies: Find complementary colors for your chosen color. The site also lets you search tints (for instance, through a paint manufacturer’s swatches). Lot going on here, took me an extra minute to suss it out, but I like it.
  • TopStyle Lite: Unlike all the others, this one is not web based. Free/lite version of a nice little CSS editor (man, I wish it had search!). Has some very nice features related to colors though. Like an eyedropper to snag colors from other apps. Once you have a color, you can get a list of complementary colors, harmonious colors and nearest browser-safe color as well. Nice gadget to have around.

I know there are tons more. Have any favorites? Drop a comment!

Man these are awesome. I wish you could take all three and have them as a ‘add-in’ mod for my editor.
