VMware Converter

VMware logoNow here’s something you don’t see every day. VMware has released VMware Converter, a (beta) utility that can, among other things, clone an existing machine into a virtual machine. It can also migrate virtual machines amongst various VMware formats and other 3rd party formats too.

I have a little test server at the office that is very important in our development environment. Unfortunately, it’s based on hardware that’s at least 6 years old. With this utility, I could convert it to a virtual machine and, presumably, use the free VMware Player to run it off of one of our big new servers. How cool is that?

Stay tuned… if I get around to trying that, I’m sure I’ll mention it.
