Snap Preview

I had a few minutes to “play” with my blog today and I used 2 of those minutes to integrate an interesting new feature. If you hover over links anywhere on my blog, you’ll get a little popup preview image for the destination.

These images are free courtesy of something called “Snap Preview Anywhere.” Signup, get a free bit of code to add to the site and you’re done. For those reading this via a feed or other syndicated service here’s a shot of what it looks like in action:

If you’re a WordPress blogger not comfortable with modifying themes, give this plugin a shot.

Snap’s whole deal seems to be aimed at making searching more visual and interactive — and it truly is, give it a shot sometime. Now, this free preview service isn’t without hooks: You’ll notice each popup not only shows the link target, but also has a little search form at the bottom. You can launch any sort of search from that form so it’s actually rather useful.

Speaking of that search form, I was just looking over the link and realized changing one of the query string vars would disable it easily enough… I’ll have to review the T&C to see if that’s allowable, but if it is I may do so.

Seriously, give their search site a shot though. I see great potential.

Oh, handy, in the build a link feature of the website for snap there’s a radio button you can check or uncheck that will turn on or off the search bar feature of the snap preview anywhere thingee so I doubt it would be a violation of the tos if they offer to turn it off for you.

The plug-in also offers to turn off the search feature.

I’m torn between removing it and leaving it. Right now it’s gone but it might be convenient to have. Sort of a value added, search bar on mouse-over feature that I may find useful myself. *shrug* A lot would depend on quality of results, and only way to find that would be for me to use snap search for a while. I’ll get back to you on that one. :)

    Hey Rich,

Amusingly, I noticed that was an option about 10 minutes after making this post. Doh… I should’ve paid more attention the first time around, eh?

Like you, I’m torn. For now I’ll leave it on, I think.
