PortableApps Suite 1.0 Released

PortableApps MenuPortableApps.com announced the release of their new PortableApps Suite 1.0 yesterday. There are two flavors: Standard and Lite (approx 90MB and 30MB downloads respectively) and both can be customized. At first glance, not too different than what you’d get if you downloaded a bunch of the portable apps individually, but it also includes a spiffy menu application (the picture on this post).

Speaking of the menu, I must confess that it looks “prettier” than PStart. And it is much simpler to use. Add new programs and it finds them. Delete programs and it drops them. As near as I can tell, the program list is built up each time the menu is started.

Which is a bit of a mixed blessing, really. Sure, it’s easy. But suppose you have executables on the USB key that you don’t really want in the menu (like all the binaries that are part of PuTTY/PortaPuTTY)? PStart isn’t nearly as pretty, but might be a better choice in a scenario like that. All that being said, there’s no denying that this menu is visually attractive and very simple to use and manage. The additional folders for documents and images is a nice touch.

Same announcement also mentioned that portable Firefox 2.0 has been released. Which is the reason I stopped by the site today. The suite was just the bonus plan!

One thing you forgot to mention was the abominable install time, like fifteen minutes or something heinous like that.

I don’t know yet how much I’ll like it, but it’s similar to my pstart setup so I thought nothing to lose by trying right?

You still using pageflakes? Which rss reader are you using now? It’s pageflakes right?

I did the little install and it did take quite a while. 10 - 15 sounds about right. I just figured that was due to my el-cheapo USB key.

As for RSS reader? I’m still using Google Reader.
