November ‘06 in Review

Freedom from Want - Rockwell paintingAnother month has flown by. This month was the anniversary of my switch to the WordPress blog platform. I don’t see myself switching to something else anytime soon. Coincidentally, perhaps, it is also the month when I began to be a bit more focused in what I write about.

More prolific too. This is my 601st post since the switch. I’ve had 805 comments (ok, well over 10000 comments, but most were spam and destroyed by my spam eating plugins).

I thought it would be interesting to see what the most viewed posts were for November — and when they were originally written. Let’s have a look, shall we? The top five were:

  1. Quick Firefox tweak - free mem — First written in December of last year. This post is, by far, the most viewed post I’ve every put together.
  2. Firefox 2 Beta 2 - Unlock toolbars? — This one is from September of ‘06 and got some very helpful comments.
  3. New server, Hamachi Linux — February of ‘06 and I’m not completely sure why this one gets so many hits. Hamachi and Linux in the same title?
  4. Microsoft NetMon 3 beta 2 — Scribed the end of this past September. Netmon3 was released this month so I suspect that explains the search engine traffic.
  5. Windows Desktop Search 3 Released — I put this one together towards the end of October.

As you may surmise, a lot of my volume comes from the search engines. Over 71% for the last year, in fact.

Did you notice that no November posts were in the top 5 viewed posts for November? Nor the top 10. That’s a bit depressing… Ah well, guess they can’t all be home runs!

Just because it seemed interesting, I decided to do a similar report, but including all of this year. January 1 - November 30th.

  1. Quick Firefox tweak - free mem — ok, no real surprise.
  2. Firefox 2 Beta 2 - A bit longer look — Another Firefox post. This one’s claim to fame was being mentioned on Asa Dotzler’s blog.
  3. How-to: Using SyncToy to make a nightly mirror of My Documents — I’m not positive, but I think this one was on the Stumble list for a bit. I wrote it September of this year and was rather proud of it.
  4. Hamachi VPN as service - why? — I put this one out last January, back when Hamachi was getting a lot of blog time. I suspect the search engines are sending folks to this post wanting to learn something, not an opinion piece…
  5. New server, Hamachi Linux — November’s number 3, all time number 5. Huh.

Clearly, I should add Hamachi, Firefox, Linux and VPN to all my posts to drive up search engine traffic. ;-)
