(X)ubuntu and Slow DNS

It was just a week or so ago that I cobbled together another laptop running Xubuntu. Alas, I didn't have that one for more than a few days before I decided my oldest son could use a computer more than I needed a secondary machine. So, it became an XP Pro laptop...
However, I've built yet another machine to play with. This current laptop is yet another frankenstein machine. It needed some love and a helluva lot of work, including a (almost) complete disassembly to yank the cpu cooling assembly. I had that rebuilt and got it all back together earlier this week. 39 out of 40 screws back in place -- not bad, eh?
This one truly rocks Xubuntu, but had one maddening issue: DNS resolution was painfully slow. Every new URL would cause another 10-20 second wait and it was driving me nuts. Earlier this evening I did a google search and found some similar issues. The general consensus is that this is a problem when using your local router for DNS.
Now, to be fair, I've used this same router for the other two Xubuntu laptops with no issues. But this one sure wasn't happy about something. So, for grins, I ran
-
sudo network-admin
and used the IPs from OpenDNS for my DNS servers.
Lightning fast now!

Glad to hear OpenDNS was part of the solution.
Thanks for stopping by, John.
Yep, OpenDNS rocks. I’ve been using it for quite a few months so far and have been quite happy with it.
Thanks for this! A few months back I installed Ubuntu and for the life of me I could not figure out why the net ran fine in Windows and not so much in Ubuntu…and a few other distros. I had the exact same problem. slow to connect to any link I clicked on but ran the regular speed when actually connected. This was the solution to the problem.
