Have you heard of FON yet? The self-proclaimed World’s Largest WiFi community has a great offer going to celebrate their first birthday. Free LaFonera WiFi router (some limitations and appears to be US, UK and Canada only).
What’s FON all about?
FON is the largest WiFi community in the world. Our members share their wireless Internet access at home and, in return, enjoy free WiFi wherever they find another Fonero’s Access Point.
It all started as a simple idea. Why should you pay for Internet access on the go when you have already paid for it at home? Exactly, you shouldn’t. So we decided to help create a community of people who get more out of their connection through sharing.
Finally, I’ll be a Linus Fonero instead of an Alien!
If you’re not a sharer (a Linus), you’re an Alien and can use the FON network for just $3/day. There are also “Bills” on the network which are businesses and they get a bit of profit-sharing in return for some ad concessions.
Dunno about you, but my neck of the woods needs more of these. Check the maps to see if you can start one in your area too. Oh, and check the downloads area — if you already have a compatible wifi router, you could convert it.

signed up for the freebie, this might be very useful on the road… gotta check the map periodically and see how it looks where I travel.
