Windows Home Server Beta

I just received word that I’ve been accepted into the Windows Home Server beta program. Based on what I’ve read, this seems like just the ticket for my family and our needs.
The timing stinks though! I had just talked myself into not needing a server at home anymore. Mostly because the old one died. Even bought a nice zippy new drive for my desktop. So… if I try this out in beta I need to cough up for another drive and a DVD ROM drive (the server install appears to be DVD only).
I can go cheap on hard drive — for a home server to do file sharing and printer sharing I can’t see a need to pony up for another Raptor. Heck, a big ol’ 5400 RPM drive would be just fine. And hey, speaking of drives, check out this “The Death of the Drive Letter” blog post. Wow!
Say… should I do the first look as a VMware install? If I realize I love the idea then I pony up for the hardware? That might be the ticket. Speaking of virtualization, have I mentioned that Virtual PC 2007 is available and free too? I suppose I could kill two birds with one stone and look that over as well. Wonder if it supports USB devices?
The WHS Blog looks rather informative — I’ll be adding that to the subscriptions. Thurrott’s Preview from last month is very informative as well. Similar info from ars technica.
