Google Toolbar Catches Me By Surprise

As I do many times a week, I was searching my posts for an old topic. Suddenly, I saw this dialog appear:

Custom Button Search Dialog

Totally blew me away — I’d never noticed this little feature of Google Toolbar before. Is it new? Is it related to my recent install of Google Desktop? I mean, I’ve known that you could add custom buttons and searches, I’ve just never had it offer to set one up. Pretty cool, really.

What’s really interesting about this is that I wasn’t even showing the Google Toolbar at the time…

  • Did you check memory footprint? Is the toolbar running but not showing? What’s the source of that prompt? The desktop or the toolbar? I don’t like stuff running itself without telling me… even googley stuff.

  • Chris, this particular option was available from the last Google Toolbar version, I think you just never noticed… :)

  • Rich – with indexing not running, mem footprint seems to be around 15 – 17MB depending on when I look. Some of that is probably related to pretty gadgets I have going. Not svelte but not too heinous.

The prompt was from the toolbar. I guess it doesn’t matter if the toolbar is actively being shown or not from what I’m noticing. I actually kind of like that feature. Just startled me though.

  • Mayank – I think you’re spot on. I also suspect that I hadn’t tried out the previous version. ;)
