Yeah I would agree with fruit engine, but

I one should keep an eye on link relevancy, number of links per page, domain age, blacklist -spam status and so on...

More backlinks mean higher page rankings. Higher page rankings mean greater traffic. Greater traffic means more conversion.

I am not trying to be a smart ass–maybe I am just stupid.

Probably more the former than the latter. :) After a glance at your blog, it's safe to say you're going to get way more search engine hits on way more common terms than I ever will. ;-)

Anyways, the short answer to all your questions? SEO. It turns out I'm a closet narcissist. Anything that helps people find my posts and read 'em makes me happy.

The longer answer? Meme's can be fun! Checking the list of linked blogs when I was first tagged proved informative. I added a few to my reader. Why not pass it along? (that's rewording the second sentence of my post)

Do I expect to get a traffic increase from this? Nah (and a glance at stats shows less than 10 referrers from other "tech train" posts). Will it make me more money? Rather doubtful. This blog will likely never even pay expenses.

And that's okay. I have fun.

But you're right, there's very little value in getting links just to get links. Those aren't "sticky".

Thanks for your thoughts. My rationalization muscle needed a workout!

I am not trying to be a smart ass--maybe I am just stupid. But, what is the point of getting links for the sake of getting links?

I understand, if it is a commercial venture the viability will get clicks. It also is a way to beat the search engine rating system (like the reciprocal Digging networks)--so perhaps you will get some more readers.

But, perhaps I am noble--or perhaps just ignorant. I get links--but I am so naive I think it is because some blogger thought there was something worthwhile I wrote that was worth linking to.

And I don't necessarily reciprocate. Albeit I might tend to read someone who links me more often, and so the chances I throw a link that way is more likely--but it is not an automatic thing.

Don't take this wrong.

But, am I really off base here?
