Got your Joost Invite Yet?

Joost Beta logo Getting Joost invites has been, until recently, pretty much impossible unless you’re a well-connected person with well-connected friends.  However, that’s loosened up this week.  In fact, Gigaom has worked out some sort of arrangement with Joost that has resulted in a simple page with a simple form that will result in a Joost beta invite.

Missed all the hype and wondering what Joost is?

What’s Joost? It’s free TV, with the choice to watch alone or with friends. Joost is packed with internet tools such as instant messaging and channel chat, allowing people to really share the TV experience. It’s a completely secure platform for content owners that respects their rights, while protecting and enhancing their brands.

Oh yeah, and it’s a way to sell ads.  But isn’t everything?

I’ve played with it a bit, not enough to decide anything yet though.  Content is still light, although there are frequent announcements about upcoming channels (and you won’t find those on their blog for some odd reason).  Finding Rocky & Bullwinkle and Ren & Stimpy was pretty exciting though.  :-)   And yes, there’s more “sophisticated” options as well.

By default, Joost wants to run full screen.  Frankly, that drives me nuts.  However, it’s easy to get it to run in a window.  That way you can have some TV going and still have access to your computer.  That’s assuming it isn’t pegging your processor, which seems to happen to me from time to time.  Granted, my mighty AMD 2500+ Barton core cpu could be showing age…

I like TV on my computer.  I have to face the fact that I’m in front of a monitor most of the day and deep into the night.  I don’t really watch TV outside of a few shows that we record (DVR) throughout the week.  The ability to “multi-task” in some other shows has some appeal.  (Don’t tell anyone, but sometimes I like to go watch Gilligan’s Island on AOL’s In2TV).  Speaking of content and that last parenthetical statement… AOL’s In2TV kicks Joost’s butt for content!  Presentation is sure different though.

For the moment, Joost is on my “wait and see” list.  It could be pretty slick — if the content providers keep signing up.  As always, I’m curious to hear what other folks think about it, just drop a comment.
