QuickBooks - How Much is That Upgrade?

I had to call QuickBooks support today. I’d just reinstalled my copy of QuickBooks 2004 (Basic) and was having an issue activating or registering it. A quick phone call and that was resolved.
Then the phone rep let me know that my version of QuickBooks would be expiring the end of this month. No more support. But, for the low low price of $199.95, he’d be glad to mail QuickBooks 2007 Standard and send me a link to electronically download it.
Gee.
Not that I don’t like using the QB products, but these days my side business is way to the side. Spending $200 on accounting software is a lot like swatting a fly with a Buick. Pure overkill.
Last October, I wrote about Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2007 (product link). I think it’s time to make the change. The price is right, at any rate.
But wait, speaking of free, I just learned that there’s a free version of QuickBooks called QuickBooks Simple Start. Intriguing, but the 20 customer/vendor limit is a killer. Well, that and the fact that it can’t import from other QB versions! Cool idea though — they should market that a bit.
Now I’m curious, are there other free or intro deals out there for accounting software? Granted, it’s not a glorious field… but it sure is necessary!

Upgrades for most software products are a joke. You end up paying the same or more then you would if you just bought the new product online.
