Laptop Repair

Check out this picture (apologies for quality… my cell camera isn’t all that great in dim light). It sums up my evening:

Laptop Repair still life

A neighbor (and father of one of my son’s best friends) brought over a laptop for me to look at. It didn’t take long to realize it was hosed up pretty bad by a virus.

What we have:

  • Knoppix CD – I initially booted off the Knoppix CD to have a look around and see what I could recover.
  • Drive – Initially, I was going to copy his My Docs on to a USB Key. Then I realized it was over 12GB… I opted, instead, to just pull his drive, attach my USB converter to it and copy it all over to my server (and AV scan it all too, of course).
  • Precision screw driver set – When you don’t have a small enough torx driver to remove the laptop screws, a nice small standard driver will usually fit.
  • The obligatory notepad and pen – I can’t function without ‘em.

See that “Teach Yourself Java” book in the background? It finally found a way to be useful — it keeps my LCD monitor an extra two inches off my desk. :-)

  • I love the fact that your Java book has a new use. I have the exact same book. A couple of weeks ago, I re-purposed mine into a yoga block :)

  • See? And I always thought Java books weren’t useful.

We’re doing some lanscaping out back this weekend. If I had about 100 more of these, I could do some nice decorative borders. Or use ‘em as pavers!
