Transferring Settings

Version mis-matching with the Windows File and Settings transfer wizard can cause high blood pressure. Trust me, I found that out earlier today. For a brief moment in time it seemed I had lost about 20GB of my daughter’s data!
After her “new” machine was loaded and patched, I fired up the File and Settings Transfer (FAST) wizard, pointed at her stuff on a lan drive and…
The location that you specified does not contain stored information. Please type a valid folder path into the edit box.
If you entered a path to a folder on a removable disk, the disk must be in the drive.
Oh crap. Hmm, maybe it doesn’t like UNC notation? Mapped a drive letter to the location and tried again.
Same thing. Oh boy.
Then I recalled seeing something about FAST in the optional stuff at Windows Update.
Hark!

Apparently that was installed on the old computer. Once I grabbed that update for the new computer, the wizard miraculously realized there was data to transfer. *phew*

Your daughter has 20GB of data?!?!
Just wait… when your daughter’s in high school, 20GB will be sneezed at.
