Queue Up Links for Later

One of the really cool features of Netscape Navigator 9 is the Link Pad. By using the Link Pad to store or queue up links that I want to look at later I’ve dramatically reduced the number of tabs I have open. That, in turn, reduces memory consumption. (I first looked at Navigator 9 earlier this month)

The Link Pad is always ready, hanging out in the bottom left corner of the browser:

Just click’n'drag any link on the page down to that little icon and it’ll be stored in the link pad list o’ links. You can also click that icon to show the Link Pad’s sidebar. When the sidebar is visible, links can be dragged right onto it.

There’s also a right-click menu option to save the links as well:

Save to Link Pad from right-click menu

This is not another means of bookmarking. These are “one time” links and they stay in the list only until you click them. Once clicked, they go away for good.

As I’m reading feeds or articles that have links I might be interested in, I just scoot ‘em over to the link pad to deal with later. If I don’t have time to read it at that moment, no worries — it’ll be there next time I open the browser. I’ve found this to be a very helpful means of queuing up links that I might be interested in.

I’ve been using Netscape Navigator 9 for a few weeks now. In fact, it is the default browser on two of my machines — I like it that much. Anyone else using it? Thoughts?

I got it installed, but I use both Firefox and Netscape. Didn’t know about the link pad though. It will get much more use from now on. Any idea if there is any plugin for Firefox that does this?

Hi “Brick” — I’ve not seen a Firefox plugin like this, but that sure doesn’t mean one doesn’t exist.

If there isn’t one yet, I’d wager there’ll be one as soon as this Navigator feature gets more positive attention (not unlike the Opera Speed Dial). ;)

With Netscape being no more after Feb 2008 hopefully someone will come out with Link Pad for FireFox soon.
