Can Laptops Get Any Cheaper?

My father-in-law has been using an old laptop of mine for the last 4 years. He’s a saint, that old man… We’re talking Toshiba Tecra 8000 sporting a Pentium 2 233MHZ, 256MB RAM running Windows 2000.
It actually doesn’t run all that bad, but the display has been starting to dim and, more importantly, some of his favorite sites have so much java/script in ‘em that the little laptop just chugs.
Since he’s here for a few days, we decided this would be a good time to go shopping. Best Buy is just down the street and lo and behold, look what we found:
Compaq Presario C714
- 1.46 Pentium Dual Core
- 1 GB Ram
- 120 GB hard drive
- CD and DVD burner
- 15.4 WXGA “BrightView” (and it is bright)
- Vista Home Premium (omg media center)
- and more
Price? About $480, even with my ridiculous local tax rate.
Ok, holy crap — but that seems really cheap for what you get! This thing probably runs circles around the Tecra I bought 2 years ago for twice the price.
I do need to figure out all these Intel CPUs though. This is Dual Core, how’s that compare to all the other models?
There is a spot of irony here though… this thing will be a kabillion times faster than what he’s been using, right? But he’s still on dial-up. *sigh*

The prices are getting so crazy nowadays. My laptop I bought for $1200 (got it at an absolute bargain a year ago, might I add) is now selling new for $750! Following that trend, in 3 years time they’ll be so worthless they’ll practically be giving them away!
Hey Matt - maddening isn’t it?
I should’ve mentioned, we saw a Gateway laptop (based on a Celeron) for around $340. Half the memory, 2/3rd the hard drive and the celeron. But still… dang… that’s cheap!
I have a Compaq in my household and it has been a very reliable computer. The monitor had an issue once, but it was covered by the extended warranty. The system is still in use now, nearly 3 years later, and shows no sign of going away any time soon.
i love the prizes of laptops. what i don´t like to much the laptops are not to good selectet to the users. like a gamer needs no big hard drive but a good grafic card. somebody who just write a lot in word don´t need the good grafic card so work on that laptop seller and get some more customers.
