Looking for Fun with Mobile Data

Sprint Mobile CardI now have this nifty new Sprint PX-500 mobile wireless card. We needed more data options for the traveling sales and marketing folks at work, so I added this to my account earlier today (well yes, I’ll expense the data plan…).

It was easy to decide which one to buy, as this one cost a whopping $10. I love that the local store was willing to match the web site pricing — and didn’t make me fart around with mail-in rebates.

Setup was a breeze. Install a bit of software, reboot and jam in the card. The software is reasonably unobtrusive and definitely simple to work with. Click a button and get connected.

It’s faster than I had expected — I guess I’m a bit out of touch with cellular/wireless data these days (and probably blessed with low expectations). My limited testing seems to have it anywhere between 500 and 768kbps for downloads and 200 – 500kbps for uploads.  My most recent test at Speedtest.net looked like:

I’ve used it for about two hours just to get a “feel” for it and so far am quite pleased.  For casual surfing and work usage (including VPN and Remote Desktop) it seems to work quite well.

Now, help me think of novel and interesting ways to use this thing! When the sales & marketing folks don’t have it on the road, I intend to get some use out of it. No sense wasting the “unlimited” data plan.

But how? I have a laptop and I have wi-fi at home and work so there’s not much value in those locations. What else can I do with it to get fun or productive use? Any ideas?

Idea 1: It’d be kind of fun to hang out at Starbucks and not pay their wi-fi rates!

I wonder how I could connect this thing to my iPAQ…
