Fanboi Post About the Mogul

image I’m the proud owner of a new gadget: the HTC Mogul (a model of Pocket PC Phone). Not to be all gushy, but I smile every time I use it. I love this thing. It makes me happy.

(Yes, I’m aware other networks have newer versions of this (like “the tilt” from AT&T). I’m tied to Sprint)

Time to retire the iPAQ 4355 and Toshiba e740 (the latter had been dedicated as an e-book reader for the past few months). Time to give my Razr to my son. The Mogul replaces what those 3 did, and is even giving my laptop a bit of a run. The coup de grace is being able to VPN to the office and use a terminal services client to control a server — from anywhere that I can get a Sprint or WiFi signal. Priceless!

The usability payoff is the combo of the very nifty slide-out keyboard and how quickly the screen re-orients itself when said keyboard is slid. The screen is smaller than my other Pocket PC’s, but far easier to read and the keyboard is very easy to adapt to. The entire phone is not too far from the size of a pack of cards (not as wide though).

I’ll follow up later with an article about the software I’m loading some other time. Jumping up to Windows Mobile 6 is a whole new world for me; I’m still looking, researching and testing (for instance, when done I’m going to give the .NET VNC Viewer a try and spend more time with my Opera Mobile trial).

More to come.

I have been using a WM 5.0 phone for a year or so and I found a few pieces of software that are worth trying. There is a google maps client and a windows live search client that are both excellent. I installed them both from the internet on the phone which is pretty cool. Also Kevtris is a great tetris game for windows mobile.

Enjoy your new phone. I will be interested to hear what features you find to be especially useful

Does it have a touch screen, stylus? how do you move the mouse on the remote desktop sessions.

Yep, it’s a touch-screen unit. The stylus basically works as the left mouse button when in remote desktop. Just tap and go. I haven’t had to right-click yet, but I believe it’s a tap & hold. Works pretty well once you get used to the smaller view-port (basically, I get a view “into” the screen and have a little control to drag around what I can see.

I’ll definitely want to look for that google maps client…
