Can Display Resolution Be TOO High?

calendar Posted on November 10, 2007   comments 8 Comments

I have a new laptop with a 17″ panel. That panel is running at 1900 x 1200 pixels resolution..

Laptop Resolution

Part of me is loving it — I can get a lot on screen at a time. It is truly awesome, especially on a laptop! But I’m not sure my eyes can keep up with this damned thing. I don’t wear glasses. Yet…

I have a 22″ running at 1680 x 1050 at the office. About 5 inches larger and a bit lower resolution than what’s on this laptop. Typically, I’ve considered that just about perfect. I’m quite used to it.

I’m going to try to adapt to this, but if you see me walking down the street squinting, take pity and point me towards the office, please?

Oh, any tips on good high-res desktop backgrounds would be welcome. :-)

But back to the title of this post — at what point do you draw the line on display resolution vs. display size?

Looks like your icon will look so small,, But I think it doesn’t matter as long as you have 17 inch laptop. for the Mini Laptop lover like me (12inch) it will break my eyes

I agree that higher resolution is not always better. If the screen is to small, everything is to small.

As for high-res backgrounds, try http://www.interfacelift.com

I wish my MacBook Pro had a higher resolution. I struggle with 1440×900. I’ve had to resort to using virtuedesktops to get the extra real estate needed to get real work done.

I second interfacelift.com, it is a great site for high res cityscape wallpaper.

Thanks for the tips on interfacelift.com. Lordy, that’s a lot of pics to sort through!

I also found some nice freebies at digitalblasphemy.com.

Darknight - this resolution at 12 inches would make my eyes bleed!

Nathan - bingo. However, I am starting to get comfy with this panel…

Peter - My home 19″ wide runs at 1440 x 900 (when not busy waiting around at Best Buy…. There are times I was it was a bit taller, but generally find it a nice comfy resolution (on that size screen).

    Rev’aurus(Mayank?) - I should’ve done that! I’m sure I’ll have an excuse to show one soon :)

WOW, 17″, just wonder What is the weight? And will it too heavy for you to carry?

Hi Kelvin - this laptop is a “desktop replacement” so it is indeed a bit heavy… 10.1 pounds including the power brick. It’s not as chunky as some though as it is only 1.4 inches thick.

    Too heavy? Nope!

I for one have grown spoiled on the 23″ LCD that I purchased a year ago… It’s also running at 1920 X 1200. I have a 1440 X 900 at work, and it’s difficult to switch between the two. I work on macs though, and although I do love them, I’ve found that you really do need a lot of screen real estate to use it like you should.
