Google & AIM Chat

So yeah, I’m a few weeks behind… but I finally had a chance to try out the recently announced Google Talk and AOL Instant Messaging integration. It works reasonably well, but I’m honestly a bit disappointed.
See, it’s not really integration per se. Instead, you can log into your AIM account while using the integrated chat in the free Gmail interface. You can’t talk directly to AIM users from your Google account. A simple distinction, but one to be aware of.
Secondly, as with most things related to Google chat, it is half-baked. You can only do this from the Gmail page. The Google Talk gadget and stand alone apps don’t support it. Google Apps user? Don’t even hold your breath.
Long story short? Until it works from the Google Talk gadget or app I’m under-whelmed. Until that happens, I can at least chat with my wife (an AIM holdout) when I’m in my free gmail account — so not a complete loss. Or I could just pop up Meebo…
