Looking for a way to use Windows Live Messenger that’ll work on pretty much any computer? I was looking for something like this last week but my search-fu must’ve been weak. However, last night I was looking over my phone’s mobile web shortcuts and spotted this little gem.
I present to you: Windows Live Messenger, HTML edition! (aka mobile)
Seriously, as far as I can tell, this is a lowest-common denominator version of Windows Live Messenger around. In fact, you have to remember to manually refresh the page from time to time to keep up with your chats.
Old school, eh? I’d wager that this will work on pretty much anything that has an Internet connection and can render a reasonably modern web page.
Can’t run Meebo? Try this. Can’t install software? Try it. Running Windows 95 on a 486? Maybe try it (seriously though, upgrade!)
Peek at the source — there’s barely any JavaScript or fancy-schmancy stuff going on. Just plain old HTML (tables!) and a 5 line JavaScript function.

There are also dozens of “all-in-one” IM applications. I won’t even attempt to list them all here as that’s really a bit far adrift for this article.

Personally, I love mobile apps. I wish every app could be easily put on my flash drive, so that I had truly ‘mobile’ computing, without having to lug a laptop around.
