The Google folks just made a good day even better. No longer must I whine about the poopy IMAP support to Gmail from my Windows Mobile 6 phone.
Nay, no more. For they have fixed it!
There are a lot of email clients out there, each with its own quirks, so making IMAP work across all of them can be tricky. We’ve worked with Microsoft engineers to debug the incompatibilities with Windows Mobile and made some tweaks to our code.
Oh, I am so giddy right now.
Don’t get me wrong — using the mobile web interface was working just fine. But this is so much more convenient (and quicker).
I don’t know if this was a Windows issue that Google had to code around or a Google issue to begin with. Frankly, I don’t even care. I’m just so happy that it is resolved.
Want to configure Gmail IMAP support for your particular mail client or device? There are a quite a few specific configuration instructions available.

I set up imap access to my gmail account on my 5.0 Q, and I thought it was just me that had issues with the imap(Honestly I didn’t spend mush time troubleshooting it). It was un-usable on my phone. I am glad to hear and see that they fixed it. Thanks for the update.
Awesome! You can’t help but wonder if Google is using an IMAP codebase derived from Cyrus or Courier, or if they built it from the ground up…
Good News. I’m sure you are enjoying PUSH email on your winmoble 6 phone.
What about just posting the fix here? basically, when you enter the inbound and outbound server addresses, you have to add the port to the server address, so, instead of “smtp.gmail.com”, you’d enter “smtp.gmail.com:587″ into the outgoing mail server field. You also have to select ssl and authentication and all that, but getting the server addresses to include the port info (you have to do it for the inbound server as well) is the key to getting it to work.
I didn’t post that fix here because including the ports with the address isn’t necessary when configuring a Windows Mobile device for Google’s IMAP access. Or, at least, hasn’t been for me on the devices I’ve set up
What sort of device are you setting up that makes it necessary?
