VMware Server FTW!

(yeah, virtualization is still on my mind)

VMware LogoI resurrected an “old” database server this week. It’s rocking a pair of hyper-threaded Xeon (3.0 Ghz), 4 GB and 6×300 GB drives (and a spiffy RAID controller) in a 2U case. Dusted it off and dropped a fresh install of Win2k3 and now it is my primary VMware Server. I have 5 clients moved(or converted) so far and capacity for a few more.

Loving it.  And since it is running x64, I can add even more with a cheap memory upgrade.

I really dig this technology. By converting I freed up a few older servers that I can either retire or use for other projects. By consolidating I reclaimed some resources from our oft overworked development database server. All for the low low price of free!

All the images being hosted are pretty much pure dev. or necessary but low-utilization servers. A perfect fit for being virtual machines.
