Evernote 3 — Correction and Addendum

image Earlier this week I published a small novel about my initial experiences with the Evernote 3 preview. To recap: I like it but had a few kvetches.

One of my beefs was related to formatting notes in the windows client. I just couldn’t understand why the only way to do formatting would be via keyboard shortcuts…

Turns out that one was totally a PEBKAC issue. I accidentally double-clicked on a note yesterday and was surprised to see it open up in a separate editing window. ::blush:: I’d never thought to do that before. I’m truly embarrassed.

That window offers an editor toolbar with all sorts of nifty features. Just what I was looking for and problem solved! Well, mostly. There’s no editor button for checkboxes which seems like an odd oversight. I’ll feedback it. Yes, I’m hung up on checkboxes and being able to do to-do lists.

I had some comments and emails requesting invites to the preview program. I’m told that’s coming soon, but the ability for me to invite others isn’t “live” yet. Hang in there!

Evernote 3 is seriously cool. I’m finding it an excellent way to gather & collect data. I’m not quite ready to use it as the cornerstone of my GTD system yet (need to be able to manage checkboxes from web first I think) but it’s getting closer the more I use it.

The searching power is just incredible. I’m really getting into clipping web pages and (online) magazine archives — even as images — knowing that a search will easily turn things up again. Below is an example of a search I did from the web interface. The search phrase was found — and highlighted — in an image:

Note: That search was from the web. Awesome, eh?

I’m loving it too - but again only using it as my collection bucket for now. Don’t feel it’s ready for running my GTD set up at present but very promising.

Hi Rob - I agree. I’m using it a lot now for collecting. More each week.

Main thing I’m missing are my beloved checkboxes from OneNote…

Chris - Agree, using CTRL+Shift+C to enter a simple check box on the windows version is just not the same as the flexibility that OneNote offers with it’s multiple check boxes - this is one of the things holding me back from using evernote as anything more than a capture tool at present.

Exactly! At a minimum, I gotta be able to easily add checkboxes (and hell, let’s dream aloud and ask for easy outlining) from any of the EverNote interfaces - web, desk or mobile.

For that I’d start shelling out bucks and convert. It’s sooooo dang close to awesome thus far…

Looks like I have 10 invites for EverNote Beta 3 if anyone is interested.
